Only known casting dates of January & February, 1960. These two were cast on January 12 & 13, 1960. Latest observed castings have a February 1960 date. There has been a lot of discussion about some of these heads have a 3781178 part number, but it is my belief that the “8” is actually a “3” that is almost closed leading one to think it’s an “8”. This is the earliest of the known HIGH PERFORMANCE cylinder heads that evolved in the better known 1147 HP heads in 1961. These has been some consideration that GM produced these heads as a “stop gap” until the 1147’s were ready and could qualify for NASCAR use. All is conjecture, but the timing and limited production of these heads make it plausible. These January heads would be perfect for the earliest of the 61 HP 348’s. Doubtful if you find a better set. Still has factory crayon (1173) and yellow paint on the heads.
